I like Android because of the freedom it gives me. As a software developer, I can (and have done so) write and publish apps for the Android OS easily using open-source tools all the way. Android is far less Nazi-like about what apps can or can't be submitted to its Market.

But this is really just the same old debate about Apple versus PC. Do you prefer a slick device that does exactly what the manufacturer wants it to do (and nothing more), albeit very well? Or do you want a device that's willing to try to do whatever you want it to do (which may or may not alter overall performance)?

Personally, I always choose the latter. I'll sacrifice aesthetics and perfectly consistent performance for a device that puts me in control of pushing its limits and--just maybe--enabling it to do far more than its manufacturer intended.

I will soon be making this decision myself. My renewal will be coming up shortly and I have been waiting for the iPhone to come to Verizon. Originally I had just assumed that I would go with the iPhone because I already have an iPod Touch with lots of apps on it that I can easily transfer to the iPhone. (And because all the computers in our home are Macs.) However, I must say I am very impressed with the Droid "Incredible," and so the decision is not so cut and dried any more.

FWIW, my observation among friends and relatives who have one or the other both seem extremely happy with the phones they have. That is, all the iPhone owners I know love their iPhones, and all the Droid owners I know love their Droids. I realize this is not a very clinical test, but at least anecdotally it says to me that I'll probably be happy with either phone.

Not sure this is any help to you at all, but it's where I find myself at the moment....

For what it is worth..

I have, and use Mac's extensively. But I decided to go with an android phone, for several reasons.

1. Both platforms are now stable, with good app support, and fast. (so that's a wash)
2. I wanted 4G speed.
3. I didn't want to deal with ATT (and yes, Verizon is an option now, but didn't want to switch to them either.
4. I got a good deal. :)
5. I like the optional slide out keyboard on the phone I got.

I do love my android. But I don't think I'd be any more (or less) happy with the iPhone4, aside from carrier choices.

I prefer Blackberry.

For what its worth ... my wife bought a Droid to replace her old Blackberry Curve, and disliked it enough to give it to my sister and go back to the old phone.

It's true that they aren't for everyone. My wife likes a simple phone with quick, easy navigation, something that she can learn once and be done with it. Not surprisingly, she recently upgraded from her ENV2 to an ENV3. :)

I, on the other hand, like something that I can change up once in awhile. An Android phone is a lot like a PC in that it can be customized and tweaked in just about every way (at least, as far as the UI is concerned). Navigation is constantly changing, depending on how you want to us it. Do you want one home screen or seven? Do you want your app's shortcut to be on the desktop, or is it better stored away in the app drawer?

It works out well for my wife and I. She likes that she can find out whatever information she needs (phone number lookup, product reviews, showtimes, etc) whenever she needs it just by asking me to look it up, but she'd have an aneurysm if she had to figure out how to pull the info out of the phone herself. :)
